George was acquired by my husband, John, in 1983 as a pet, when he embarked on his college days at CSU just weeks before we met and fell in love. Wow, what a windfall! The man and the dog! I never imagined what would transpire in the next 25 years! George started it all here….he was “justa great dog”. We didn’t know anything about show dogs in those days. Just a bunch of college kids, going to Horsetooth Lake with our retrievers, playin’ frisbee & dreaming of the future…. no fancy titles (though he was a pioneer TDI therapy dog!), and no big ‘aspirations’ for stardom…. George was a fabulous college kid companion, retriever, & friend to all: animals & people alike. His temperament (now after 25 years of breeding) can be rivaled by just a few great ones here at Golden Endeavors: Suds, Abbey, Ripple, Connor & of course Georgie’s girls, Marti & Grazie. George set the standard by which all others shall be measured & judged….Forever….at Golden Endeavors.
He had a lifelong mate, Dahlailah Del’acqua (pictured with him), who produced our first two litters. Silly us, we didn’t keep any of those pups. George & Lailah got hip clearances from our local “pet vet” before any special skill was “required”. They cleared eyes without notation. At nearly 16 years old, when OFA became concerned about SAS in Goldens he even passed that!… Still great tickin’ after takin’ a lickin’! Good Ole George!
George was a maintenance free golden. Never an ear infection nor skin issue, in fact, he had to be taught to bark. “George, what’s on the house?!” the college boys would roar…..and one dat George finally said “Roof”! Good boy George! He barely had a veterinary record up to the day he left us. He was the picture of perfect health & the quintessential Golden.
George graced us for 16 wonderful years & selflessly raised countless puppies. He taught us how to live happy & youthful lives… “in the moment”. When he passed, he did it in maintenance free style….10 seconds flat chasing the girls of his “herd” at Golden Endeavors! We are fortunate to have frozen his semen (some of the first ever successfully done!) and produced a few “pupscicles” recently. We are also fortunate to have received his sister’s descendent, “Marti” thru good fortune from our dear friend, Jane.
We plan to “repeat the feat” & resurrect him again someday soon. Stay tuned!
